Wreaths Across America

"To be killed in war is not the worst that can happen.  To be lost is not the worst that can happen...to be forgotten is the worst." - Pierre Claeyssens (1909-2003)

The mission of Wreaths Across America, Remember, Honor, Teach has been accomplished every year since 1992 by continuing the annual wreath laying cemetery at Arlington National Cemetery and Veteran's Cemeteries all over the United States and internationally.  Our American Heritage Girls Troop is honored to be able to join with Wreaths Across America by selling sponsorships for wreaths to be placed by the girls at the Fort Bragg Main Cemetery.

This is our main fundraiser of the year, but more importantly, the most meaningful project of the year.  Most of our families have military ties.  Girls will take part in the ceremony held on that second Saturday in December by personally laying the wreaths they sold sponsorships for on the graves of the Veterans buried there.

Last year was our first year and the girls sold over 300 wreaths.  Despite the rain and bitter wind, the girls were there to place those wreaths during the December ceremony.  They came away from the day wishing that they could have honored every Veteran buried there.  Thus, our goal for this year was set: a wreath for the grave of every Veteran buried at the Fort Bragg Main Cemetery.

Our goal this year is to honor every grave
at the Ft. Bragg Main Post Cemetery with wreath.
Our Autumn Fest booth, October 1st, will be an energetic kickoff to the Wreaths Across America fundraiser this year.  We will also be selling in the community and going door to door in our neighborhoods.  We will conclude our sales until November 18th.  With a goal of honoring all of the 1500+ graves on post, these ladies will be working hard to show their patriotic pride and salesmanship.

Funds raised go toward off-setting the cost of troop activities this year, the largest of which will be the overnighter on the USS Yorktown (aircraft carrier) in Charleston Harbor, SC this spring while we are working on our Freedom's Heroes badge.  We are also blessed to be close to the first ever state-wide AHG Camporee scheduled for summer of 2012 right here at Camp Durant.  Girls can apply their funds to offset the cost to their families for these events.

We'll be keeping track of our wreath sponsorship progress on our main page, so please check back often! An article and photos of the wreath laying ceremony will also be posted after the event.  Girls who sold wreath sponsorships and participate in the Wreath laying ceremony will receive a Wreaths Across America patch and a 2011 rocker.  Our hope is to continue this project for many years to come and offer this opportunity for our girls to grow up in AHG remembering our Veterans, honoring those who serve and learning about the sacrifices made by our veterans and their families to preserve our freedoms.

Despite the cold weather, the girls enthusiastically
laid the 300+ wreaths that were sponsored last year.

The wreath laying ceremony is always on the second Saturday of December.
